      Purpose of the role

      To assist the facilities manager and facilities supervisor in providing efficient and effective caretaking support to the business. This includes ensuring the security and general appearance of the buildings and surrounding areas are maintained in accordance with required standards. The role involves attending to repairs and scheduled maintenance of technical and building assets and services, including but not limited to electrical, HVAC, lifts, generators, and UPS equipment, ensuring the smooth, efficient, and effective operation of the building within the requirements of the OHS Act.

      Scheduled and day-to-day maintenance
      • Ensure facilities are in optimal condition.
      • Perform daily building, grounds, and equipment inspections as per the checklist provided by the facilities supervisor. Log and attend to maintenance or replacement needs promptly.
      • Complete and submit daily facilities checklists/feedback to the facilities supervisor.
      • Run the generator and sprinkler pump as per manufacturer requirements.
      • Refill printing paper daily and replace toner cartridges as needed.
      • Clean access units around the building daily.
      Maintenance tasks
      • Oversee the overall maintenance of the building and grounds.
      • Monitor and follow up on scheduled maintenance dates.
      • Assist with obtaining quotes from suppliers or contractors for facility improvements.
      • Purchase maintenance stock as required, ensuring all receipts are handed to the facilities manager or supervisor.
      • Supervise contractors to ensure outsourced work meets specific requirements.
      • Establish sound working relationships with employees and service providers.
      • Respond to calls logged by staff and ensure resolution within twenty-four hours.
      • Assist with employee moves, ensuring furniture and electrical resources are in place.
      Facilities stock and storeroom
      • Maintain and securely store hand tools and electrical tools.
      • Keep an up-to-date schedule of tools and conduct regular inspections and stock-takes.
      • Maintain a stock of necessary pool chemicals and store them safely.
      • Keep the facilities storeroom clean and organised.
      Function and event setups
      • Assist the facilities manager or supervisor with event setups, including furniture arrangements and relocations.
      • Monitor and support external event company setups, ensuring compliance with guidelines, protecting lifts, and reporting damages.
      • Assist with clean-up operations after events.
      Health and safety
      • Ensure all installations comply with the OHS Act, quality and environmental standards, and building regulations.
      • Maintain clean and safe maintenance areas.
      • Verify compliance with safety audits for contractors or service providers entering the premises.
      • Monitor contractors for safe working practices.
      • Conduct required safety inspections and submit reports as directed by the Primedia health and safety team.
      • Address safety deviations in collaboration with the safety team.
      • Ensure fire equipment is serviced annually or as prescribed.
      • Attend safety training and meetings as required.
      Other responsibilities
      • Assist the facilities supervisor with administrative tasks, including cleaning, security, and biometric queries.
      • Help update the asset register and ensure furniture is tagged and traceable.
      • Provide support with vehicle-related tasks, including delivery to service, washing, and repairs, if a driver is unavailable.
      • Assist with deliveries as needed.
      Minimum requirements
      • Matric
      • Basic artisan qualifications (beneficial)
      • At least three years of experience in building maintenance
      Skills and attributes
      • Technical artisan knowledge and ability to operate tools
      • Customer-centric attitude
      • Initiative in resolving building issues
      • Strong communication skills
      • Self-starter with the ability to plan and prioritise tasks
      • Team player who can work independently
      • Willingness to work overtime at short notice
      • High attention to detail and accuracy
      • Ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision
