Overview
An opportunity is available for a committed and dedicated professional to join our postgraduate motion picture medium lectureship (BA Honours in Live Performance and MFA in Live Performance Medium) in 2025. This role focuses on learning outcomes in development, entrepreneurship, and innovation for television, film, and other entertainment platforms. The honours degrees in motion picture medium and live performance build on undergraduate studies through practice-led research and research-led practice. The MFA programme focuses solely on the motion picture medium.
The degrees consist of three key components: core course, research development, and discipline. The growing recognition of creative practice as a form of research is central to these degrees, where practical work and research inform and enhance each other.
We are looking for an experienced lecturer with industry expertise to teach across the motion picture discipline and research development. The ideal candidate will have the drive to inspire students, guiding them in scriptwriting, producing, directing, and integrating research into practical outcomes.
Experience in engaging students with both classical and contemporary texts in film studies and production would be advantageous. Candidates should also have a strong research background, particularly in academic writing.
The successful candidate will teach scriptwriting (fiction), producing, and directing within the motion picture stream and oversee the research course. They will develop lesson plans, teach, assess student work, and coordinate with other lecturers to ensure a high standard of education. The candidate must be willing to embrace AFDA’s applied and integrated work-simulated learning approach.
Key responsibilities
- Deliver lectures in scriptwriting, producing, and directing, as well as selected research course topics.
- Develop and update lesson plans, course materials, and assessments.
- Conduct research to ensure relevant and current lecture content.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to students, ensuring clarity on assignments, assessments, and deadlines.
- Manage facilities and equipment needed for coursework and student projects.
- Assess student progress through formative and summative evaluations.
- Ensure consistency in course delivery across AFDA campuses.
- Supervise honours students' research projects.
- Organise graduation exhibitions and industry engagement events.
- Plan and coordinate workshops, boot camps, and production schedules.
- Provide feedback on student projects during screenings.
- Participate in quality assurance and curriculum enhancement.
- Engage in marketing activities, such as open days and prospective student consultations.
- Assist with postgraduate motion picture events and MFA courses as required.

- Excellent communication, time management, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Docs, Teams, Zoom, PowerPoint, and Turnitin.
- Ability to manage budgets, facilities, and equipment inventory.
- Capacity to stay updated with industry trends and technological advancements.

Selection criteria
- Minimum qualification: a relevant master’s degree (motion picture/film).
- Experience in academia, creative writing, English, or a related field.
- Previous lecturing experience or industry experience is an advantage.
- At least five to ten years of experience in television commercials, television series, feature films, or documentary films.
- A demonstrated interest in teaching.
