Toughees launches back-to-school campaign fronted by Makazole Mapimpi

Toughees has been a trusted name in durable school shoes for over 70 years, standing strong through generations of learners, teachers, and families. The brand remains synonymous with quality, reliability, and the ability to withstand the challenges of everyday school life, from playground to classroom.

“At Toughees, we believe that toughness comes in many forms, beyond just physical strength,” says Lemogang Kodisang, Marketing Manager at Bata South Africa, which manufactures and distributes the Toughees brand.

“Whether it’s overcoming adversity, standing tall in the face of challenges, or showing emotional and mental toughness, we want to showcase the unique stories of our ambassadors and inspire children across South Africa to embrace their own inner toughness.”

Mapimpi is a beacon of hope for many South Africans. Growing up in the impoverished rural village of Tsholomnqa outside East London, he faced immense hardship. The loss of his mother, brother, and sister left him to fend for himself at a young age, and he witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of gender-based violence.

Despite his challenging circumstances, Mapimpi's talent for rugby was undeniable. Encouraged by his teammates and coaches, he began to dream of a brighter future. However, with limited opportunities and a lack of resources, it seemed like a distant possibility.

Against all odds, Mapimpi's unwavering spirit and dedication to his craft propelled him to new heights. He rose through the ranks of South African rugby, from humble beginnings in club rugby to international stardom with the Springboks. His journey serves as an inspiration to millions, proving that even in the face of adversity, it is possible to overcome challenges and achieve extraordinary things.

Mapimpi shared, “For me, toughness is about the ability to keep going, no matter your circumstances. I faced many challenges in my life, but with determination and hard work, I was able to overcome them and achieve my dreams. I want to inspire children to believe in themselves and never give up.”
