Jockey Partners with Robin Hood Foundation to Empower Local Seniors through Mahala Market

In a world where generosity often feels scarce, the Robin Hood Foundation shines brightly with its Mahala Market initiative, now in its seventh year. This cherished event brings joy, dignity, and essential supplies to some of society's most deserving members, local grandmothers and grandfathers.

This initiative closely aligns with our Jockey values and principles of supporting communities, as it provides people with a stress-free shopping experience that they might not typically have. At Jockey, we understand the importance of new underwear in fostering a sense of dignity and self-worth. Our goal is to give individuals the confidence to shine from the inside out every day. We were honoured to sponsor garments valued at R120 000. Members of our marketing team volunteered their time on market day, embodying Madiba's belief that giving your time is the truest form of kindness," says Bruce McMurray, General Manager of Jockey South Africa.

Cindy Norcott, Founder and Chairperson of The Robin Hood Foundation, echoes this sentiment, "The Mahala Market is a testament to the incredible power of community spirit. Our seniors deserve the best, and it’s heartwarming to see how our sponsors and volunteers come together to make this day special. Each item, each smile, and each gesture of kindness make a world of difference. Companies like Jockey, who donate essential items such as underwear, play a crucial role in ensuring the dignity and comfort of the recipients."

Held at the Valley of 1000 Hills Community Centre, the Mahala Market is a heartwarming affair where senior citizens shop for free. Approximately 30 seniors and over 550 people in total were welcomed with open arms, receiving tickets to participate in the market. Upon arrival, they are treated to hot tea, coffee, sandwiches, and cake, all while enjoying live music that sets a festive tone for the day.

The market boasts various stalls brimming with shoes, accessories, linen, clothing for both men and women, and kitchen items. These stalls are stocked with donated items from generous sponsors and community members. Each participant gets the chance to select items they need or can use to support their families. As they fill their bags, they also receive additional essentials like a 5kg bag of maize, shampoo, vegetables, and staple foods.

The impact of the Mahala Market on the community is immense. Each participant leaves with as much as they can carry, bringing home items that directly benefit their families or neighbours. In many cases, these goods can be sold to generate income, further supporting their households. This initiative exemplifies the power of giving, turning items others no longer need into valuable resources for those in need. It’s very reminiscent of the Madiba spirit, showcasing the immense impact of collective kindness and compassion.

The Robin Hood Foundation invites individuals and companies to get involved in their numerous initiatives throughout the year. Beyond Mandela Day, there are many ways to contribute, such as sponsoring events or donating essential items. With over 200 projects per year, there are countless opportunities to make a meaningful impact.

The Mahala Market stands as a shining example of how generosity and community spirit can create lasting positive change.
