Described as one of the friendliest of Springboks, Nomis is best remembered for tries he scored against France in 1968 and the All Blacks in 1970. Nomis held the record for the most consecutive matches (25) played for the Springboks and is considered along with Okey Geffin as one of the greatest Jewish rugby players of all time. Endorsing the former Wanderers RFC star was inducted as a member of the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1999. Nomis played his last international game against England at Ellis Park Stadium 40 years ago but hasn't lost his love or passion for the game and is regularly seen at Absa Currie Cup and Super Rugby games in Johannesburg.
Last September, Nomis contracted pneumonia as well as blood clots in his left leg while visiting family in Switzerland. Doctors had no option but to amputate his left leg and after an intense recovery period, Nomis has adapted to his new way of life.
Former Springbok captains Dawie De Villiers, Morne Du Plessis, Ray Mordt and famous rugby commentator Hugh Bladen have come together to support their friend and former teammate at the Tribute Dinner on September 6th, one year after Nomis' operation. Forming part of the evening's festivities will be an interactive panel discussion involving the ex Springboks. With the 2011 Rugby World Cup kicking off days after the dinner, panel master Bladen will be on hand to test the knowledge and opinions of the fellow rugby stars.
Overwhelmed by the support of his former teammates and rugby friends, Nomis emphasised how close-knit the rugby fraternity is. "I haven't played rugby in four decades but the support and encouragement I've received from my friends, former teammates, players of yesteryear, businesses and the public has been phenomenal. I'm really looking forward to the dinner, to seeing old friends and engaging in a healthy discussion about rugby."
