The Boss of the Year® Award was founded by Dictum Publishers in 1990, and is designed to identify and recognise great business leaders in South Africa. The participants are nominated by an employee who provides a motivation for why they think their boss should be Boss of the Year®.
Previous Boss of the Year® Award winners include Brand Pretorius in 1994 (MD of McCarthy Retail), Ismail Dockrat in 2005 (EO of Wesgro), Terry Volkwyn in 2006 (CEO of Primedia Broadcasting), Kgosientso Ramokgopa in 2008 (CEO of JHB Fresh Produce Market) and Lerato Mosiah in 2010 (GM of Healthcare Afrox).
The motivation for Justin's nomination made reference to his business acumen, his generosity of spirit and his social conscience which drives him to bring about positive change in his company and its broader community. Examples of the latter include his close working relationship with a number of SMME's that is designed to empower them, and his founding of an NPO, the Event Greening Forum, with Grace Stead (icologie). The objective of the Event Greening Forum is to promote green business practices within the South African events industry.
The 2011 Boss of the Year® Award semi-finalists come from a range of industries and sectors. For example, Scan Display is an exhibition, event and display specialist, while other semi-finalists for 2011 represent finance, government, mining, transport, further education, professional bodies and a fast food chain.
From the hundreds of nominations submitted, 15 semi-finalists have been selected. This will then be narrowed down to a group of six finalists to be announced on National Bosses Day (14 October). From there, a single title-bearer will be chosen.
The Scan staff members are firmly behind Justin's nomination. Says Dichabe Lebotse, the company's Financial Director: "Justin really deserves this recognition. He is someone who always leads by example, and takes an active and compassionate interest in all of his staff. He also has a great sense of humour, which makes working with him a lot of fun."
Justin says: "It is a huge honour to be nominated by my team for this award, and then to be selected as a semi-finalist."
