Ready to become the Michaelangelo of animation?

If you are an astute observer of life with a curiosity about the world and great drawing skills to match, a career in animation could be for you.

It is with great excitement that False Bay College has launched its one-year full-time Animation National Certificate at its Muizenberg Campus aimed at aspirant animators who are keen to pit their skills in this highly specialised and competitive field.

Renowned animator, artist and educator, Riaan Theron, will be developing a new generation of 2D animators for careers in TV production, commercials, educational videos, video games, smart device content and even blockbuster movies.

Riaan's impressive track record spans TV commercials for Coca-Cola, Kellogg's and Samsung, to name a few. He is passionate about training future generations of South African animators committed to their dreams of success in animation whether locally or internationally.

Currently the South African film industry has a dire shortage of quality animators, so a passion for drawing and design, cartoons, video games and animated movies, could just open the doors into this market with a strong portfolio as a gateway to the industry.

There are a few important considerations every aspirant animator should think about before embarking on this career. Competent drawing skills form the foundation, but these should be matched by an interest and proficiency in computer and electronic tools. In essence, images conceived will have to be animated using software. A desire to put in the time and dedication to the craft is also essential.

Applicants who have a Grade 12 will have to submit a portfolio comprised of a model sheet, drawing component, storyboard illustration and writing component, further details of which are available on enquiry to False Bay College. Classes are starting on 16 January 2015.

Successful candidates will then embark on a one year full-time programme where they will learn about the principles of animation, animation production, storyboarding, layout, life drawing and digital drawing. Students will be instructed on the following software: Flash, After Effects, Illustrator and Photoshop.
