Cathy Hughes joins National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Broadcasting Hall of Fame
Urban One founder and chairperson Cathy Hughes will officially be part of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Broadcasting Hall of Fame, when she is inducted at the 2019 NAB Show during the Achievement in Broadcasting Dinner on 8 April 2019 at the Encore in Las Vegas. During her time growing Urban One, formerly known as Radio One, as an urban market leader, Hughes became the first woman to own a radio station that was ranked number one in a major market.
She had started her career in broadcasting at Howard University as a lecturer in its then newly established school of communications in 1971. During her time at the university, she also served as general sales manager at WHUR-FM, Howard University Radio, increasing the station's revenue from $250,000 to $3m in her first year.
Beyond her professional career, Hughes continues her family's work and legacy at The Piney Woods School in Mississippi, which was established by her grandfather in 1909. She also mentors countless women in addition to advocating on behalf of the homeless and minority communities.
